ABOUT Clothes for Smiles

The Clothes for Smiles project developed by UNIQLO and Novak Djokovic is based on a fund of $10 million (US) raised from the sale of HEATTECH and Ultra-Light Down products, with the aim of bringing hopes and dreams to children's futures. $5 million (US)* of the $10 million (US) fund will be given to support UNICEF, and we are asking for your help in deciding how best to invest the remaining half.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Hello, I am Novak Djokovic, professional tennis player and Uniqlo global brand ambassador. This is the first time for me to partner with a global retail company like Uniqlo, that has strong roots in Japan. Uniqlo and I have a common desire to change people's lives and society, for the better. Today, I am very pleased to inform you that since announcing our partnership in May, Uniqlo and I are ready to launch an exciting new global project called 'Clothes for Smiles.'

The aim of this project is to bring smiles to kids all over the world, nurturing their dreams and giving them the tools to build a better and brighter future. Uniqlo and I will do this by establishing a 10 million dollar fund, and you will be able to help the fund grow by purchasing clothes from Uniqlo. For every item you purchase, a portion of the price will be contributed to the fund. In addition, we ask participants around the world to freely contribute their own ideas, which I think makes this one of the most far-reaching, innovative projects ever.

When I was a child in Serbia during the war, we often had no choice but to give up on our dreams. But no matter what happened, I never gave up my dream of becoming the World's Number One tennis player, something that I have achieved. Over the years I developed a philosophy that I call “Be Unique.” This philosophy is based on a strong sense of passion, particularly toward helping people who have been less fortunate than I. I have become the person that I am today because of the help and generosity I received from many people since I was a child. I would like for you to join me and Uniqlo in helping other kids achieve their dreams. Please take part in our new project. Thank you.

UNICEF aid

UNIQLO support will initially take the shape of education-related projects in the following four countries.

Bangladesh

Project Objective:
Establishment of a child-friendly school environment providing quality education
Project Overview:
Create a child-friendly school environment with improved classrooms, water and sanitation facilities, teaching/learning materials, training for teachers, social mobilization of local communities. (Project area: Palashbari Upazila in Gaibandha District)
Background:
National level enrollment rates in primary education may appear on track to meet MDG2, however, the most critical challenge facing the country is significant income and geographic disparities and around 1.3 million children still remain out of school- either not enrolled or dropped out without completing the full cycle.

China

Project Objective:
Effective sanitation and hygiene in Child-Friendly Schools
Project Overview:
Create a better environment through suitable water and sanitation facilities in schools and addressing climate environment and disaster education in schools. (one county in Chongqing, Yunnan, Xinjiang, Guizhou, and Guangxi)
Background:
China has increasingly focused on the challenging task of education quality. The poor sanitation and hygiene in rural schools is directly related to a child's health and affects their school attendance rate.

Philippines

Project Objective:
Building a healthy, safe and protective school environment and community system
Project Overview:
Strengthening school and community based management of educational programs. Strengthening disaster risk education and management. Improving hygiene practices such as hand washing and brushing of teeth. (pilot projects in 5 areas are planned)
Background:
The education disparities arise mainly from poverty. Toothaches and diarrhea are among common ailments causing children to miss school. The situation becomes more difficult in schools with poor access to safe drinking water and sanitary toilets. The country is among the most disaster prone and disaster risk education and management are urgent issues.

Serbia

Project Objective:
Reducing early school leaving in Serbia
Project Overview:
Identification of innovation approaches for drop-out prevention. Training and improvement of the capacities of key stakeholders so they can design and implement effective measures to decrease early school leaving. Provision and implementation of grants projects for 5-10 schools/communities
Background:
The effects of the global economic crisis have resulted in a significant rise in poverty. Poverty disproportionately impacts children's education and early school leaving.
